Legendary Devlog #4

Sorry I’m late. New job.

Instead of rigging the battle system, I’m still stuck on maps, tilesets and level design. It’s going well, putting all the free hours I have into that and loving it.

Gameplay wise, want to mention how characters work in game. As everyone already knows, the game has 5 time periods and each one will foster 6 playable characters. That’s 30 characters to choose from at the start of the game.

Each character has a set build; fighter, ranger or magic user. Some have mixed builds. Leveling goes quick, characters can reach a max level of 5, each level unlocking a new ability. Some characters have unique abilities, though many also overlap between different heroes, like heavy attack, multi attack and such.

Most characters can equip most gear types, mostly. But fighters require melee weapons for their abilities to work, rangers requiring ranged weapons for the same. Rangers can equip a big swords or axes, but they won’t have all the big attack abilities, nor will they be able to use their fancy shmancy bow or gun skill with melee weapons, naturally.

One reason that binds the large cast of heroes and their fast paced development is death. The game’s difficulty, though selectable, is not designed to be easy. Battles can be hard and characters may easily die. When death occurs, there’s a small chance the dead hero will leave behind a ghost, which can be brought back to life. More powerful heroes will have a very slightly greater chance to leave a ghost. But if there’s no ghost, there’s no coming back from death and the hero is lost for good.

Out of the 6 heroes for each period, 3 of them are considered superior with better hero classes and oftentime some kind of gimmick that lets them become more powerful. For example, the Tribal period has a Warrior hero who upgrades into a Berserker class when he reaches level 5.

Another example is a Wolf pup. One feature of the game is seasons, to which a yearly cycle is in play. Every one or two three years, the pup grows into a larger pup, then into full grown wolf.

Other gimmicks for other characters will also be available.

Most other characters will have mediocre or joke builds and are not as powerful, mostly being there as expendable party members.

Yet the very first hero that a Player picks will get a special stat boost, no matter the character. The chosen one will also always leave behind a ghost and down the line will be able to upgrade themselves into a Legendary Hero class, putting them even beyond any of the stronger hero classes.

That’s all for now.

See you later.
